To Scale or Not to Scale?
I’ve had lots of questions about whether athletes should do Scaled or Rx division in Friday Night Lights. My answer: “It’s up to you.” But you may want to know a few things before you make your decision. You have three options when registering for Friday Night Lights
Option 1: Rx Only
This option means you are doing every workout that CrossFit Inc prescribes as Rx, meaning if one of the Open workouts is announced as 7min of Muscle-Ups and you don’t have muscle-ups- you’re score will be zero. However, just because you won’t win that workout, doesn’t mean you can’t win any of the other 4. Whoever has the best score each week will win that week’s competition and prize. This does mean that your potential for winning the overall prize in that division will be significantly reduced. The overall winner will be selected as the athlete with the least number of points, assigned by where they place in each workout. If you’re okay with that, sign up for Rx!
Option 2: Scaled Only
This option means you are doing every workout that CrossFit Inc. prescribes to the scaled division in the Open. If you need to scale the workout further, you will be able to but you will not place higher than in that workout than anyone who has done the workout as prescribed. Again, the higher you place in each workout, the better your chances are at winning the overall prize. If you typically scale the day to day workouts in our gym, I would suggest this option to you.
Option 3: Mix and Match- Some workouts Rx, some workouts Scaled
With this option, you will choose as the workouts are announced if you would like to Rx or Scale. If you choose to Rx any one workout, you will automatically remove yourself from winning the Rx or Scaled division overall. You may still win weekly workouts, but you will not win the Rx or Scaled division overall competition and prizes.
My suggestion is to assess your current ability and make the choice that will challenge you, while allowing you to achieve the goals you have set for yourself this Open season! There is no wrong choice!
